I Just Learned Something New

It was the day of my 7-year old son’s  field trip. He and his classmates excitedly participated in the tour guide’s programme as my fellow parents watched the children, amused.

We passed by Dangwa, a popular fresh flower marketplace, so the tour guide asked the students to name some flowers.

“Rose!” “Daisy!” “Santan!” “Sampaguita!” The children shouted in reply.

My son waved his hand in the air, until finally, the tour guide asked for his answer.

“Snapdragon!” He shouted.

Solutions

The Coleman box had juice and sandwiches. We had a thermos of water. A video camera and a digital camera, and a bag with extra clothes, towels, chips and a fan.

Were we going on a picnic? No! There was a big event in my son’s school that day.

What This Girl Wants

My daughter is turning 4 next year, and should be ready by then to go to nursery school. But hubby and I  mulled over the idea of sending her to school when she’s already 5, even 6.

You see, my son went through all 3 levels of preschool. But he had the same lessons for 3 years. And the neighborhood kids became his friends, so I wouldn’t say he was in need of socialization. And I don’t think his lengthy preschool period alone made him ready for the big school.

So I thought Nursery level was unnecessary - my son could have began at Kinder or Prep and there wouldn’t be any difference in his performance in Grade School today.

So our decision was to make our daughter skip Nursery, and begin at Kinder or even Prep.

But our little girl has other plans. Continue reading ‘What This Girl Wants’ »

Lessons

Do you know that ”kipot” is the term for the body of water between two islands?

“Ilog” is the body of water from the mountains that go to the sea, and ”sapa” is smaller than “ilog?”

Do you know that Gloriamaris is not only a restaurant, but the most beautiful shell in the ocean?

Do you remember that the white in the Philippine flag stands for purity, blue is love for country, while red is bravery?

I have all that information, and more, in my head and for the next couple of weeks, I can enumerate them at the drop of a hat.

My son is taking a series of tests in school this week, thus we are doing a lot of studying. But it sure feels like hubby and I are the ones gearing for those tests!

I will get back to blogging as soon as this is over.

And please visit The Filipino Mom Blog. Take care!

The 4th Year

This new school year is my 7-year old son’s 4th year in school.

This is the 4th year a teacher has asked the students to bring a family picture to school.

And this is also the 4th year we have realized we don’t have a hard copy of any of our family pictures since we got a digital camera.

And so this is also the 4th time hubby and I will either rush to Kodak or have a picture churned out by our printer.

The 4th time I’ll wish teachers go digital and allow students to bring a memory card or a CD. Or perhaps she can put her email address on the homework notebook.

For the 4th time, we will make a resolution to have our pictures on print.

And for the 4th time, we will surely forget about it. Until the next school year rolls in.

Bullying 101?

This story I got from “Binhi,” which is my son’s school book for the subject, Filipino.

buk1.JPG(You may click on the pictures to enlarge). The title of the story is Kumain Nang Wasto (Eat Right). It is about a young boy, named Bobot, who gets teased by his playmates because he is very thin. They call him “Bobot Payatot.”

So Bobot runs to his mom, and sobs, “Tinutukso na naman po nila akong payatot.”  (They tease me as Payatot.)

The mom says, Continue reading ‘Bullying 101?’ »

What You’ll Surely Expect in a School Program

So you want to see your adorable kid in his/her cute costume sing and dance in a school program.

What you should do is get up from your chair and find a good spot.

Because if you stay rooted in your seat, you will not see anything but this. Continue reading ‘What You’ll Surely Expect in a School Program’ »

see how creative I can get

My fellow parents cheered me as soon as I entered the school grounds. “Ang creative mo naman, ” they gushed.

They were impressed with the excuse of a maracas that I got for my son. I saw the teacher’s note, that we had to look for these instruments, two days before their Christmas program.

We scoured bookstores and toy stores, but I could find none. I knew I could easily get them in Divisoria or the palengke, but at this time of the year, I couldn’t do that. I don’t like huge crowds, and I’m not going to brave one even for my son.

So I had to make do. And what I came up with was so different, I just knew everyone would notice.

They had the ones made of coconuts.

let’s dance!

My husband and I made a promise to ourselves that we would not care whether or not our son, who is now in Prep, gets high grades in school.

As long as he learns the discipline that would enable him to deal with life, we are content. This does not mean failing grades are ok. We just refuse to track our son’s development through his report card alone.

And then the teacher gave me this news.
