I Just Learned Something New

It was the day of my 7-year old son’s  field trip. He and his classmates excitedly participated in the tour guide’s programme as my fellow parents watched the children, amused.

We passed by Dangwa, a popular fresh flower marketplace, so the tour guide asked the students to name some flowers.

“Rose!” “Daisy!” “Santan!” “Sampaguita!” The children shouted in reply.

My son waved his hand in the air, until finally, the tour guide asked for his answer.

“Snapdragon!” He shouted.

The bus was suddenly quiet. I guess everyone was thinking what I was thinking -  what in heaven’s name is a snapdragon?

“Snapdragon? I’ll research ha. I’ll look in the encyclopedia. I don’t know that,” the tour guide laughed nervously.

As soon as he sat down, I asked him. “It’s a kind of flower. I saw it in a videogame. ” I thought, hmm, this must be one of those flowers made up by moviemakers, or in this case, the creators of that game.

I hurriedly went online as soon as we got home, and found this, to my surprise.

That is a snapdragon. A real flower. Can be found in mid-winter areas. That explains why we don’t know this flower, we are in the Philippines, a tropical country.

My son saw the picture and said, “Mom, that is a snapdragon! Let’s look for a pink poppy.”

At this point, I was already very confident that there really is a pink poppy. But we looked for pictures anyway.

“Wow!” He exclaimed. ”How about a bluebell?”

Now, that’s a great educational game. I think I have to play it too, but I’ll ask my son to teach me first.

It’s so rare that a 7-year old kid can remember the name of a flower that is not common in the Philippines. He’s a smart kid. Snapdragons are common here…and so are poppies which come out in spring time. Naisahan ng anak mo yung tour guide. :-)
