Offline, On Purpose
I am not online all the time for the past couple of weeks. It’s a huge adjustment at first because I used to just turn on the PC as I go about my daily chores, while I take a peek every once in a while at my blog, my fave blogs, email and Plurk.com.
The internet is a God-send, but can become a problem if one is not careful.
I have noticed that I have become more and more dependent on the internet. I cook while blogging. I do the laundry while plurking. I sweep the floor as I compose an email in my mind. It seemed perfect at first. I could work and play at the same time.
And then I realized there are things around the house that I have neglected in favor of more PC time. Oh, nothing major. I sweep under the bed carelessly. The clothes remain unfolded for too long. Dinner gets delayed.
But before I find myself choosing the internet over playing with my kids, I decided to do something about it. I went cold-turkey and did not turn on the PC unless I was ready for my 1-hour PC time.
It was tough at first. My mind kept going to my blog, what could be the latest on plurk, who could have uploaded new cute pics on friendster.
But as days passed, I began to enjoy the benefits of going offline. Everything is back on schedule. No more reason to procastinate on tough jobs. More opportunities to enjoy fresh air and sunshine, hehe!
And of course, there is less electric consumption. Like I said, the PC was turned on practically from morning till night. Since Meralco has already announced an increase in electricity beginning this month, I know my resolution will benefit our family budget too.

Congratulations! Mahirap din yung kapag nasanay ka, tapos ganyan.
As much as possible kapag nasa bahay umiiwas ako magbukas ng computer. Kagaya sa mga reasons mo like electric consumption (grabe kasi electric bill ko) and more time with the kids and other chores to be accomplished for the day. At relaxing din for my eyes since kapag nasa work ako, either, computer o mga librong puro linya ang kaharap ko.

I was mostly offline too last week because of my homeschooling duties. I was able to watch a lot of my DVD tv series and read 4 books and do some chores too.
I plan to schedule my blogging time too. I think it was not the blogging thing that consume us the most, it was the Plurking thing

So true, Cess. Kahit sabihin pang naka-schedule ang lahat. Computer time needs to have a schedule too. One more thing about using the computer, especially in my case, lead by example with our kids.

It used to be emailing and chatting but now it’s blogging. Yup, we need to focus on our other obligations, esp. the home. Addiction is hard to break…there’s the withdrawal effect. At least you got to break it. Good for you.
