A Stockpile of Meat

Months ago, the news on tv said that the price of bread would soon increase. I protested in my living room, I thought the news should have said “The price of bread HAS ALREADY increased” because I bought a loaf at a higher price just days ago.

So when a show this morning greeted me with the news that the prices of pork and fish will soon increase, I believe that the prices have already changed. Beef and chicken must have been affected too. I think  that’s the way it usually is.

I feel so relieved I bought kilos of meat last week. I was in the grocery when I noticed that there was a dip in the price of meat products. Beef was sold P40 lower than the month before, pork was cheaper by P60. The meat was being sold in a supermarket which has never given me cause to worry about the quality of its food, so I just knew it was a good buy.

I was supposed to buy meat that we would consume in a week or two. But instead, I bought as much meat as my budget could afford, and was able to stack the freezer with meat that will last for over a month.

I feel I have made the right decision after watching the morning news. For the next couple of weeks, we are unaffected by the increase in the prices of pork, fish, and possibly other basic commodities. I may have spent a little more than what I planned last week, but I actually have saved money this month.

A stockpile also makes me prepared in case we are cooped in the house. Yesterday, the heavy rains made it hard for us to go out. But I had a full pantry, so there was no need for me to brave the bad weather to buy food, or to phone a restaurant for delivery. We have more than enough food in the freezer for situations like this.

I stockpile too but only enough for a week and a half. We always have short trips to the supermarket on our way home from work, especially to get bread, vegetables and cereals. Yun lang, instead of just getting what I am supposed to get,I end up getting more than that :D

During heavy rains we don’t have food delivered, kawawa ang delivery guy.

i used to ask my husband to make short trips to the grocery too, from work. and you’re right, there is the tendency to buy things not on the list. i guess that’s another advantage of stockpiling, iwas-tukso ;)

    I wish I had a large freezer!

There was this article (I can’t remember now) where they computed the cost of constantly going back to the grocery vs. stockpiling meat in the freezer.

Even with the electricity cost from the extra freezer (well, this is a US article, I don’t know how much electricity there costs) it was still cheaper to buy and store discounted meat in bulk.

I’ll try to find the article and send it to you :)

so true! i have made my own computation, and we are definitely saving more when we buy groceries and meat in bulk. in our case, going to the grocery more often meant spending more on gas and dining out ;) yan pa lang tipid na :D

hindi naman super big hehehe,, but it’s bigger than what we had before. 12 cu ft yata yung aming unang ref, now it’s 19. it was the size of the freezer that convinced me to get this ref, kasi gusto ko talaga mag-stock. it’s a GE. :D

When there is a sale, it is the time to buy in bulk…that’s a smart way to save. Only problem is when you don’t have room for them. LOL But you gotta make room…isik-sik na lahat yan. O iluto na yung iba.

I’m a food hoarder myself. When I see a good sale on meat and other food products I usually stockpile. I like buying things in bulk as well. I also compare prices before I buy. Mahirap na buhay ngayon, kailangan wise sa pera. hehehe

my gosh Cess, ang dami nyong stock ng meat. but I think that’s a very clever marketing decision. masarap bumili lalo na pag alam mong dati mahal ang presyo.

BTW, ang sweet talaga ni Hubby ha. ;)

Beef and pork are P50 cheaper? How come I didn’t notice? Where do you shop for meat Cess?

I just went to Makro and I saw almost the same prices. Except I saw cobbler fish at P58 per kilo, except I am not familiar with that fish. Told it was first cousin to kandule, I bought a big piece. Tomorrow I will cook it into sinigang sa miso. I hope hindi ako magsisi.

Aww, the travails of being home manager! Parang dapat mag-retire na din ako. :)

I wish we could stock on meat and poultry but are freezer is too small to hold that much.

When we go to the grocery, I always end up buying more stuff than those written on my list.

we do that, we call a meat shop to pack meat already chopped and prepared and packed.we would then freeze them. it saves time and yes, money as we buy them in bulk.

my mom goes to market everyday–may bad psychological effect yata sa kanya pag hindi sya nakapunta sa market sa isang araw. even sa groceries nowadays i do not stock much, kasi no matter how much or how large the grocery items are, ubos pa din kaagad, so we sometimes we buy na lang based on need. and i found out that i was able to save some money.
