A Parade of Beans

My husband and my son love pork and beans so I decided to serve them one that was not from a can.

I saw a recipe for homemade pork and beans in an issue of Good Housekeeping but I couldn’t find the magazine anymore, I must have given it away. Thankfully, I found  Lani’s blog which has the recipe on it. Thanks Lani!

The recipe called for catsup but I put tomato sauce instead. Also, the pork I used was my leftover homemade bacon.

Of course, it didn’t taste like canned pork and beans. The one I made was richer and more flavorful, and I swear that’s the truth, not because I cooked it. I do not like pork and beans but this one got me eating a lot.

I still had a lot of white kidney beans so I decided to cook sweet beans.

I boiled the beans, which had been soaked in water for half a day, until they were soft. At which point, I added brown sugar. The beans began to have that taste I was looking for after I left it in the fridge overnight.

I admit that I’m not sure if I did the right thing. I looked for a recipe on how to make sweet beans on the internet, but I couldn’t find any. I called my mom but apparently, she has never tried making homemade sweet beans. If you have any advice, please feel free to tell me. I love sweet beans!

Mmmmm, the pork and beans look yummy! I remember my dad used to cook this when we were younger. Now it seems like a great comfort food, esp with the rain and cool weather. Sobrang so reminiscent of my Baguio childhood! I might give this a try soon. :)

It’s been a while since I’ve had pork and beans. I’ve never tried homemade pork and beans before. That looks much much better than the ones that come in cans. Great job Cess.

Friend, hubby just cooked the dish exactly like yours this lunchtime. I’m always asking him why he has to buy beans and boil them for too long when we can have pork and beans in a can, he he. He would also cook the beans with some pata, and it taste good as well. Pareho pala kayo ni hubby type na food.

Bawal kasi ang matamis dito sa bahay kaya wala akong idea sa pagluluto ng minatamis na beans.

Too bad my husband can’t eat beans. Too high in uric acid. So whenever I cook beans, I make another dish just for him.

This looks really yummy. Masubukan nga. My lolo had his version of pork and beans. He used pata and instead of white beans, he used black beans. He would stew it all together and at the end he would splash some rum on it. Masarap naman :)

Looks like a hot dish whipped up by a cool mom.

If your family likes beans, you must like callos too.

I have a recipe for almost instant callos. Of course you’d need boiled-till-soft tripe and/or pata ng baboy, sliced into squares. Saute with the usual (garlic and onions) then add the meat, thern d contents of can or two of pork n beans. And voila. Veggies to me are optional.

My children love pork and beans and I must admit, I haven’t tried cooking these yet. I love how yours look but I may do another version with the meat, I can’t have that meat (liempo, is it?) in my food, my tummy would be reacting badly, sigh.

The sweet beans is a good idea too. Aba, you are getting better and better with your attempts in the kitchen ha :) Galing!

I haven’t cooked for a long time now. I just don’t have the energy to try new things. But I have been keeping track of your recipes and hopefully soon, I’ll have that renewed enthusiasm to cook.
