the big girl

Long weekend? It was a short weekend, at least for me. We were out the whole day everyday, having fun with our loved ones. It would be my birthday in a couple of days, and instead of having a feast with all of them on that day, I figured, why not give them a treat in advance?

You see, I want my birthday spent in a spa. I want a relaxing bone-breaking massage, I want to prettify my nails, I want a makeover, I want to shop. I want the works and I want to do all of them alone, because I’ve been working hard, because I’m officially off the calendar.

As my birthday would fall on a weekday I badgered Raymond my husband, months ago to take over my  mommy duties on my special day. Magpapakasarap ako, as it is a treat we all know I sooo deserve. Of course, he agreed to give me this “gift,” it shouldn’t be too hard. He has always taken the day off on our birthdays for the past seven years.

But alas, a very important meeting with his bosses was moved on *gasp* my birthday.

I told him, “It’s alright, don’t take a leave anymore.” I had my birthday celebration all through the weekend, I’m already too tired to celebrate yet again. No big deal.

But yesterday I asked him a couple of times, “You’re not really, really going on leave?” This isn’t just a ploy to make me believe that he’s going on leave, and then on my birthday, he’ll shout, “Surprise! I’m on leave!” ?

“No, I really can’t go on leave, ” he said. “Galit ka ba?”

Of course not, I said. How could I be? It’s not his fault that the powers that be decided to discuss issues on my birthday. Maybe because it’s the president’s birthday the day after. I’m an understanding person. I can handle this glitch.

And so here it is, my birthday. The day started like any other except that I woke up with birthday greetings from my husband instead of just the usual morning kiss.  I have been receiving text messages and emails from loved ones greeting me a happy birthday even before the sun rose.

Thanks, I’m truly grateful.

But still, there’s a part of me that feels just a wee bit bleak. I should be getting ready for the spa at this hour instead of waving goodbye to my husband. I should be going out with Raymond and the kids tonight - looking absolutely fab. I shouldn’t be making this blog entry. I should be writing my birthday post - tomorrow.

Sigh. Don’t worry, I’m a big girl now. It’s alright. I’m old enough to know that sometimes, things just can’t go as planned.

Aaah you’re one of those scorpio girls? Three of my children are November-born and my daughter in law is too. So you can imagine how I can run out of pasta and noodle and other bday treat ideas all through the month.

Happy birthday, Cess, you special girl you! My greetings may be late but the affection is still intact!

I hope you can treat yoruself to that spampering that you want one of these days. Birthday or no birthday, moms need a half-day for herself every so many weeks!
